Dear Readers,
Until now, this magazine has been a personally run and funded ‘hobby’. I started it from my home and, with a bunch of friends, have managed to publish six issues. We’ve carried some great interviews and published some lovely stories and poems, all under our own steam. Nobody’s been paid - not the poets, the writers, nor me. We’ve taken no money from bookshops or advertising. All the while the magazine has been growing. It’s now stocked in bookshops in Madrid, we have a group of contributors, we organise events under the ‘Madrid Review Live…’ moniker and we have a decent social media presence.
From this month - October 2025 - the magazine will be run under the aegis of a legal, non-profit association in Spain called Asociación Madrid Review. I’m - James - the ‘president’ of this association, we have a board and we have to answer to Spanish law, banks, the tax office and all the fun stuff that comes with being a legal magazine and association. As the title suggests, we are not doing this to make profits, but rather to legally pay and receive money to grow the magazine and help spread the word about poetry, literacy, the arts, reading and all the things we all like.
Our primary aim in the next year is to be able to pay poets and writers for their contributions, to provide contributor copies of the magazine and to pay staff writers, something we have not been able to do until now. We would also like to cover our basic costs (printing, design, shipping and so on). Beyond that we hope to run poetry events, spread our distribution and perhaps even expand into publishing.
Firstly, we welcome any donations from anyone who feels they can help us out. Secondly, we will be offering various subscription options (see the relevant page). There will also be a free option - and these subscribers will receive the poems and stories published in the magazine.
The monthly newsletter, which all subscribers will receive, will be a lively, interesting read which we also hope will be useful. It will include details of writers competitions and books to be published and other information which we think will be useful to you, as writers and readers and people interested in the arts all over the world.
If you do want to donate - please make a transfer to the bank account listed above and please write 'Donation' or similiar in the concept or description of the transfer. If you include your name we'll thank you in the magazine.
Thanks for reading this. I’m here if you have any questions or want to know more about the changes. I hope you feel it’s worth staying on the ride with us for a little while longer.
Please write to me at themadridreview@hotmail.com with any questions.
Stay well!
James.
