The Madrid Review Live!

The Madrid Review LIVE: Translation and the Transpersonal with Robin Munby

Robin Munby is a literary translator from Liverpool, based in Madrid. His translations include the novel Anima Fatua by Cuban writer Anna Lidia Vega Serova and The Posthumous Book of Shahrazad, a poetry collection by Asturian writer Raquel Menéndez, forthcoming in 2026.

Literary translation goes far beyond converting words from one language to another - it draws on philosophy, cultural studies, literary theory and many other disciplines, at times even touching more spiritual or symbolic realms. Translators navigate meaning, context and representation, while also making creative choices that shape tone and voice.

We can't wait to welcome Robin to the stage for The Madrid Review LIVE to talk about all of the above, plus his own work, current trends and topics in the translation world and what it is like to live and work between languages.

And, as always, we want to hear from you - the audience! We invite guests to bring readings to share - examples of writing in translation that you have read and loved, to open discussion on what it means to read and love a translation when you don't know or speak the original language.

This event is organised by Jayne Marshall and James Hartley.

Jayne Marshall is a writer and editor. Her first book A Line Drawn or Printed: Six Routes Through Madrid was recently published by Modern Odyssey Books. She is also a contributor to The Madrid Review

James Hartley is the editor of The Madrid Review, a literary magazine publishing work from new and well-known names from around the world.
